Encompassing a range of materials and approaches, from paintings and works on paper to found photographs and readymade sculptures, these four artists explore personal and collective memory, examining the relationship between the past, present, and potential futures. When I inherited my parents’ 2008 Hyundai Tucson four years ago, I also inherited the sun-damaged foam bumblebee charm that hangs from the rearview mirror. As I began using the vehicle, I was protective of this. I would carefully maneuver the car’s sun shield to not disturb this little brittle guardian of sorts, but signs of use were soon evident as I observed one of its baby blue wings break off. I was initially disappointed by this irreversible scar but tucked the fragment in the coin purse my mother used to use, where I’ve come to keep some of these mementos. The other wing stayed intact up until the week of this show, and I found a way for the two to be together again. <img width="4096" height="2731" width_o="4096" height_o="2731" (2022) is an experimental 16mm film made in tribute to my mother. A tattoo adapted from her handwriting grounds the film’s nonlinear narrative and conjures soundscapes and memories of familial connection. At once an act of memorialization and playful rebellion, the tattoo and its placement are my response to a common quip of hers—“If you ever come home with one of those things, it better be on your butt, and it better say, ‘MOM’.”&nbsp; The film navigates the space between the tangible and the ephemeral, combining archival material, intimate close-ups of the tattoo process, and a montage of moving still lifes of personal mementos and commemorative objects. Slow cinematic observations of light within the family home and views of clouds in the sky are overlaid throughout the sequence. Archival pigment print on backlight film, LEDs, modified artist frames. Each 9 x 12 x 1.5 inches. In “Althea” (2022), I revisit a set of four portraits I made of my mother in her bedroom when I was a teenager. Taken during one of the few times I photographed her as herself (an occasion she didn't particularly enjoy), these highly saturated images represent her across a range of emotional tenors. The cross-processed negatives produce an unpredictable result characterized by dramatic shifts in color and a dreamlike quality. At once nostalgic and otherworldly, the images recast the familiarity of the domestic space into the realm of unease. Cyanotype on painted river rocks. Dimensions variable. "Pool" (2022) is a series of fifteen cameraless cyanotypes made on various river rocks collected by my father. Chemically imprinted with light and time shortly after his death and on the anniversary of my mother’s, these objects refer to both absence and presence. Arranged to mimic the shape of the backyard pool where he tragically drowned, the rocks lie clustered near the ground, their placement suggestive of a burial mound or memorial site. Through this act of transformation, the ordinary stones become imbued with layers of personal and symbolic meaning, speaking to themes of loss, the passage of time, and connection to place. <img "Afterimages" (2021-23) is a series of iPhone photos and note entries that reflect on the experience of loss, documenting the period between my parents’ deaths in 2019 and 2020 and the subsequent time after. The images depict scenes and objects within my childhood home as it has changed in ways visible and felt. Casual snapshots that were initially forgotten about resurface as a poignant record of what has vanished. Each dye-sublimation print is produced with the Canon SELPHY, a portable smartphone printer designed for on-demand home use. Fragments of text, arranged on sheets of Avery mailing labels and interspersed with the images, loosely ground the visuals in personal narrative and establish a fractured rhythm. The presentation imposes the linear structure of a timeline, yet the content operates under an unsteady temporal logic that overlays past and present. Installation of paintings and works on paper by John “Beaver” Estes. Dimensions variable. “Beaver’s Show” (2021) is an installation that situates selections of my late father’s self-taught oeuvre—paintings, drawings, works on paper—within the context of my work. His mostly landscape-style pictures are hung salon style, contrasting the linear presentation of my photographs across from it (see “Afterimages”). This doubling recurs in other areas of the gallery through my inclusion of old student projects involving him. Early watercolor drawings of stray cats (both 2012) are installed directly facing Beaver’s “copycat” version made years later. “Daddy's Boy,” a split-screen video from 2013, shows us each building half of a small wooden stand, later connecting them across the two screens. Live performance. 15 minutes. “Living Room” (2020) explores the domestic space as a stage for personal and shared narratives. Conceived for nueBOX’s RE:volve performance series, the work reimagines my living room as a two-dimensional grid. Furniture and decor are represented by cut paper silhouettes colored with marker and pen, their choreographed arrangement mapping out distinct moments in time. A spoken text accompanies these movements, blending matter-of-fact observations with autobiographical asides, collapsing poetry and list-making into a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Dimensions variable. “With all my love + guts” (2019) displays a selection of greeting cards made for my late mother over nearly two decades, ranging from simple sketches to elaborate creations. This tender archive reveals traces of the personal and private through diaristic fragments captured in the cards. The title references a birthday card crafted from an airplane barf bag, an inside joke stemming from my frequent travels between NYC and home. Additional pieces from 2015-2017 document and transform everyday occurrences—like finding a stray flower or getting something stuck on your shoe—into poetic meditations on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of experience.
