Music Video, 2018. Hi8 transferred to digital video, sound. 9 minutes.
“Music Video” (originally recorded c. 2001) is an uncut sequence from a childhood videotape when I dreamed of becoming a musician. The video opens with my off-beat movements set to a looping jingle. I cycle through a mixture of cartwheels, handstands, and other gestures derived from pop stars like Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. As the footage progresses, I test the limits of what I can perform in front of the camera: flipping off the viewer with my ring finger and dancing as provocatively as possible (without getting in trouble). The automatic focus on the camera’s image strains to keep up with my erratic movements as I shimmy across the screen in all directions.
