After Freddie, 2014. HD video. 8 minutes.
“After Freddie” (2014) is a video that pays tribute to artist and dancer Fred Herko, a figure who emerged from the 1960s New York avant-garde, and queer theorist José Esteban Muñoz (author of Cruising Utopia). Inspired by Muñoz's recasting of Herko's tragic death as a defiant gesture towards utopia, the video features a figure traversing the nocturnal cityscape in ballet shoes. A set of hairy legs sashay across a moving backdrop of asphalt, concrete, and dirt. The endlessly looping footage leaves the subject's destination perpetually on the horizon.
